Pestle & Mortar is a simple and minimalist brand that works based on results: hydrated and healthy looking skin. All products are individually formulated, which facilitates their use, as each star ingredient is concentrated in only one of the products.

  • When did the desire to create your own cosmetics brand arise?

While working with my husband in our portrait photography business, I noticed how dry and lifeless the skin of many models looked. I also traveled a lot at that time and was frustrated that there was no simple and effective skin care line on the market. I come from six generations of Indian herbalists, the obvious solution for me was to research and develop my own brand of cosmetic products. I wanted to combine nature and science to create simple skin solutions. Hence the name Pestle & Mortar (Pestle and Mortar)!

  • What does the name Pestle & Mortar mean?

The pestle and mortar are tools that have been used for centuries to grind drugs and spices. It is still used today – my uncle uses a pestle, which has been in our family for over 100 years, in his medicine shop in India to grind powders for various ailments. It is a useful utensil that has withstood the pressures of time. The perfect name for my business!

  • What sets Pestle & Mortar apart from other cosmetic brands?

Cosmetic marketing is confusing and can leave us blindly browsing beauty stores not knowing which brands to trust. Pestle & Mortar products combine powerful active ingredients with natural extracts. When we trust that what we are putting on our skin is safe and highly effective we can create a skin routine with confidence.

    • Today we are witnessing a growing increase in ecological cosmetic brands. What is Pestle & Mortar's position as a sustainable brand?

    We believe brands need to approach sustainability from a position of genuine care for the environment and work smart to strike the right balance. Pestle & Mortar has always been a cruelty-free, vegan brand, with over 3000 potentially harmful substances banned from our products. As a young brand, we are not yet perfect in terms of optimal sustainability, but we are working hard to get there. It is extremely important for us to be completely transparent with our customers, because they deserve to make informed choices. All of our products are manufactured in GWP (Good Manufacturing Practices) compliant factories, our ingredients are sustainably sourced and we are continually implementing packaging changes as we grow. The Pestle & Mortar customer is concerned that he should put something on his skin that does not come at a high price for the planet, and so do we.

    • Why should everyone use Pestle & Mortar in their beauty routine?

    We combine science and nature to create cosmetic products that are easy to use, simple to understand and suitable for all skin types. The bottom line when it comes to skin care is 'does it work?'     • What is Sonia's favorite product?

    Oh! I will have to say Pure Hyaluronic Serum . This was the product that launched our brand, so it's really special to me. Everyone said: “You're crazy - you can't launch a cosmetics brand with just one product!”. I did it and would do it again! Pure Hyaluronic Serum took 18 months to set because I was obsessed with the texture. I can't stand anything that's sticky on my skin. I wear it every morning and night and take it with me wherever I go.
